Day 44 of my fast Day one of the rest of my life
All right you’ve been dieting for awhile, you’re loosing some weight and now you need to start getting those muscles ready for some proper exercise. (Actually I‘ve been doing this for a while, I just haven’t written a blog about it). So where ever you are in your journey you have to start thinking about exercise seriously. But if you’re anything like me, you’re not going to jump into a gym membership if you can barely walk, so what do you do? Where do you begin?
If you can walk at all, start going to the store, (no not to buy food), just to window shop, large department stores are the best, walk behind a basket, and go for a stroll, usually you will find that you can walk for a half hour to an hour without even noticing it, they might even have places that you can sit and rest, but watch out going through the furniture section, make sure the chairs you might rest on are strong, I’ve actually broken floor models because I’ve needed some place to sit. But pretty soon you will find your favorite haunts and develop and walking routine.
But if you don’t feel comfortable wondering around the store and not buying anything there are a few things you can do at home that don’t cost an arm and a leg.
Get yourself a senior citizen exercise video, a lot of them take place sitting, or have limited mobility restrictions. If you can stomach him Paul Eugene has a nice chair dancing routine, but he’s a little over the top for me. Chair-a-cise from LifestyleFitness1 is a little lower key though I still can’t cross my legs for the last part I will include them both and you can choose your favorite
Resistance Bands
Now the next thing you want to get yourself is a resistance band, they don’t cost to much they come in different styles and colors, (it doesn’t really matter what type you get, some are better for some things and others are better for other things) just start out with something cheep, I got mine when I was in the hospital, and a nursing home for awhile, back when I was working and had health insurance. (I guess I can look at it as the good old days, compared to where I am now, but you’ve got to play the hand life throws at you) I found this great office routine video that covers what I like to do with mine so enjoy.
Leg Exerciser
Finally I found this nice little leg exerciser on Craigslist I paid only $10.00 for mine but even new they only run around 20 bucks. What’s great about these things is that you don’t have to sit on some tiny seat like an exercise bike (I’ve actually broken exercise bikes just trying to sit on them) You can sit on a regular chair or like me you can just hang on the side of your bed and peddle away, they get your heart rate pumping and have a very limited impact on your joints.
The most important thing is be consistent, do a little bit everyday, in fact because starting out you can only do exercise for a short period before becoming exhausted, try exercising 2 or 3 times a day, you want to get that heart rate up, the longer you can keep that blood-a-pumping you’re going to loose more weight. And keep at it, the more you do, the stronger you will get. I have faith in all of you. We can loose this weight, we can go all the way

P.S. I found this video on the internet and thought it would be a great addition to anyone’s workout

I forgot to mention in my comment.... Walking to the store is a great ideal as an exercise goal destination. Window shopping, fitness center, movie theater, mall, etc. My wife and I get a dual benefit. I know your article does not specify food gather, but not a bad ideal if your shopping for super food qualtiy items. When we walk daily, we either bring back a couple bags of groceries in both hands. We try not to make it more then 3-5lbs per bag. So we get exercise and healthy fruits and veggies. Mall walking is very good as well. Cheers.
Jerry, This is fantastic! I love the last video since I am arthritic, and I am always looking for exercise that is easy on the joints. Sounds like good advice all the way around. Oh! and congratulations on your 44th day!

Good post. I've been walking almost everyday since 2003. Although I'm not considered obese, I've had my share of weight issues while going through surgeries. I've walked my way back to health. Even using crutches, cane, walker and wheelchair. You are correct, if you can walk, you can receive a health benefit. Keep up the good work. I've subscribed to your posts and would appreciate the same if you like my nutrition, fitness and pain mgt articles. Good health to you and your family.
