Losing the Weight, a Journey
58
No-one has ever confused me with being an Olympic athlete, in grade school I opted to work in the library instead of taking Gym, and in my lifetime I’ve gained and lost more weight than I can count. So I actually know what works and what doesn’t because I’ve been on every diet imaginable. I can tell you with confidence what will help you lose weight, what I can’t tell you, and what has eluded me is how to keep it off.
Every diet that tells you that they have the answer for permanent weight loss, are simple and unadulterated scams because losing weight has a multitude of components, and some of those components will help you lose weight and others are needed to maintain that weight loss and prevent you from gaining it back.
The trouble with most weight loss programs is that they try to do too much; they try to alter your relationship with food, get you to eat less and encourage you to get into shape. Each one of those components is a life changing procedures, but when you’re obese, the combination of all three can at times seem overwhelming.
The reasons why we eat can be as varied as the color of flowers in springtime; habit, boredom, genetics, Pavlovian conditioning, hunger, depression, anxiety, fear, exhilaration, celebration, and a hundred other reasons. And dealing with our relationship with food is not something a catch all weigh loss program can address, especially if your 300 plus pounds over weight. Counseling is almost unquestionably necessary for the morbidly obese, you don’t get to be 500lbs without having some emotional issues that need to be worked out. And that’s what gets me with all these miracle weigh loss cures, if you don’t address the underlining causes for the weight gain it like spraying air freshener over dog doo, it might cover up the stench for a few minuets but doesn’t get rid of the origin of the problem.
Exercise is another bone of contention I have with these catch all programs, when you can barely stand the last thing you need is some six pack muscle man telling you that you need to run around the block, or pick up the latest and greatest exercise equipment that will burn your abs in just 20 minuets a day. Get real, I use to get winded just going to the bathroom. Exercise has its place, but in moderation and at the appropriate time.
No the number one goal for the morbidly obese individual is to lose the weight. Once you’ve dropped one hundred or two hundred pound it will be much easier to move around and to start exercising, that doesn’t mean that you don’t do what you can to keep you heart rate up and metabolism running but don’t expect to get a ripped body by exercising while trying to lose the pounds, those are two different procedures.
So how do you do it? How do you lose the weight?
Would it be cruel to suggest that you read my previous hubs, I’ve been working at this process for the last 4 months and have dropped more than 100lbs. The simple answer is of course, to eat less, the less calories you consume, the more you will lose. The trick is to supplement all your nutritional needs, that doesn’t mean you need fancy dinners, or special drugs, or doctor’s prescriptions, I’ve gotten all my stuff over the internet or at neighborhood grocery stores, and since I’ve been unemployed, everything I’ve done has been on a very restrictive budget. But undeniably I’ve had great success with a fairly simple weight loss strategy, and I anticipate that I will continue to lose weight, eventually it will begin to slow down because of the adaptive ability of the human body, but undoubtedly I will continue to lose, my goal is to be around 200lbs.
To some that will still be fat, but losing 310lbs is a pretty magnificent feat, I will still have to deal with why I eat, and develop a intimate relationship with exercise but I’m in no rush to change everything all at once. What I am doing is working, and in that I couldn’t ask for anything more.
So I invite everyone to follow my progress as I work on losing the second hundred pounds and of course if there is anyone who wishes to sponsor me, have me test there products, or pay for a gym membership you can easily contact me through hubpages.
And check out my other hubs to find out how I exactly lost the first hundred.
Until we meet again through this marvelous electronic medium peace and know that you too can lose the weight, it doesn’t take surgery, or fancy doctors, or millions of dollars, just a little willpower and determination, and you too can become thinner.
